I have used and enjoyed picturebooks my entire life. My mother read to us every night before we went to bed. Even when I was in high school, and "much too old for such things", I remember joining the younger ones on the bed sometimes while Mom read. My two sons were given heavy doses of picturebooks. In my mind there is almost nothing as wonderful as snuggling up with a young child and a favorite book.

Open a picturebook and you enter another world of people, sights, sounds, and happenings. We are given a chance to wonder and ask questions and explore mysteries. Books can give us a sense of our own possibilities. Our eyes are opened to a rich variety of ways of seeing and thinking. Picturebooks are a joy and a delight and have given me countless hours of wonderous wanderings.
Thank you, authors and illustrators of the world, for your precious gifts.
